Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo Tent Review

And I saw a huge crowd of students and affiliates on campus watching the lawns. And as I circled around that crowd, I saw the last end of the New York Police Department pulling away protesters and clearing out the last of the encampment. Then there started to be more public safety action and presence. The day progressed, there was more threat of discipline. The students became informed that if they continue to stay, they will face potential academic sanctions, potential suspension.

Isabella says that this was just the beginning of a really tense period between student protesters and the University. After those two student groups were suspended, campus protests continued. They asked that the University divest from businesses that profit from Israel’s military operations in Gaza. But instead of making any progress, the protests are met with further crackdown by the University.

We inspire and inform through original bikepacking routes, stories, and coverage of the gear, news, and events that make our community thrive. We believe travel by bicycle has the power to encourage conservation, inclusivity, and respect for all people and cultures. Finally, the overall footprint of the tent is quite large, especially if you’ve gotten used to only needing the slightest sliver of flat ground to pitch your Big Agnes 1p tent.

Demystifying DWR on Rain Jackets: How Does it Work?

The Lunar Solo’s floating bathtub incorporates a fair amount of elastic. The resulting stretchiness makes it frustratingly difficult to work the zippers. Using two hands to unzip the door is a minor inconvenience, but one that I notice every time I try to get into this tent. The new paddle pocket on the front of the pack is probably my favorite new feature, and the expanded front zipper pocket gave me the extra room to stash items I wanted to access during the day...these pockets are invaluable. I've been using the Flex Pack on packrafting (and backcountry ski) trips since it first came out a few years ago, and was stoked to see the new design improvements in the Flex PR. The removable bottom stabilizer straps are perfect for packrafters using portage barrels and help ensure heavy loads ride easily.

One of the standout attributes of the Lunar Duo is its exceptionally spacious interior. So, if you’re tall or want plenty of elbow room to make sharing space with a partner more comfortable, this may be the perfect tent for you. The Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo is a great choice for solo hikers on a budget looking to save weight without sacrificing quality. The pyramid shape makes it a sturdy shelter in bad weather, and the excellent ventilation system cuts down on condensation issues that come with single-wall tents. Check out how the Lunar Solo compares to our other favorite ultralight tents on our Best Ultralight Tents list. The interior of the Lunar Solo is quite comfortable and spacious with plenty of headroom to sit up or change your clothing inside.

What I Love About the Lunar Solo

It offers very comfortable living space for one person plus all gear, it has a great and usable vestibule, it packs super compactly, and it doesn’t weigh much at all. With only one carbon pole and six stakes, it fits into the typical bikepacking bag load distribution better than anything short of a tarp. It isn’t freestanding, so your ground will need to accommodate staking. And it will accumulate condensation in the interior, sometimes a great deal. The Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo is a 26 oz single-wall trekking pole tent that’s good for three-season use. It’s simple to set up with a little practice and easy to anchor down in a stiff breeze, with extra guy-out points on the fly should you need them.

The hexagon shape makes it possible to store some gear on the side of the sleeping surface, which is often lacking in many one-person ultralight shelters with narrow, rectangular sleeping areas. I suspect I’m not alone in having an ambivalent relationship to single wall tents. I’ve tried dozens of them over the years, from super cheap to the aforementioned pricey dyneema ones. Absolutely every one of them at least some of the time developed condensation overnight on the inner walls that had to be dealt with. Pretty much each of those times, at the moment of intervention, I’d think to myself, this is bullshit, why do I put up with this? A couple of years ago I was reviewing a tent that I found so poorly designed in terms of handling condensation that we cut short the review period and instead wrote a lengthy feedback letter to the manufacturer.

The Lunar Solo tries to meet condensation with its full front wall netting exchanging air with the netting along the perimeter. If the two halves of the awning are fully rolled aside, there is loads of circulation and the tent performs wonderfully. In my experience, however, pulling down even half of the awning—let alone closing up the vestibule entirely—threatens collecting moisture on the inside of the tent. Obviously, it’s less of an issue in drier places like the western USA or Italy in summer. Then again, those are times when I’d likely not put up a tent at all. The Lunar Duo is non-freestanding, so it’s critical to pitch it taught, making sure the stakes have good purchase and you’re using all the guyout points when high winds are expected.

Budget-Friendly Ultralight Backpacking Hacks

But back on campus, some of the students and faculty who had been watching the hearing came away with a very different set of conclusions. And it’s a university on top of all that that has a real history of activism dating back to the 1960s. So when students are recruited or choose to come to Columbia, they’re actively opting into a campus that prides itself on being an activist community.

So students who aren’t feeling safe in this protest environment don’t necessarily have to go to class. It was something truly unimaginable, over 100 students slash other individuals are arrested from our campus, forcefully removed. And although they were suspended, there was a feeling of traumatic event that has just happened to these students, but also this sense of like, OK, the worst of the worst that could have happened to us just happened. And you have all of those people not necessarily out of commission, but with their focus elsewhere.

We’ve seen them in our politics in all kinds of interesting ways. And I think if we zoom out for a second, it’s worth bearing in mind that she tried to choose a different path here than her counterparts at Harvard or Penn. And after all of this, she’s kind of ended up in the exact same thicket, with people calling for her job with the White House, the Mayor of New York City, and others. Maybe not calling on her to resign quite yet, but saying, I don’t know what’s going on your campus.

For Issue 08, we invited several contributors to return and pick up where earlier trips and ideas left off and also feature a handful of first-timers whose perspectives we’ve long been eager to share... The special edition 10th issue of The Bikepacking Journal is one you won’t want to miss! It features 25% more pages with extra stories, bonus art and maps, and much more... We think the Lunar Duo is an excellent choice for backpacking pairs, which is why it’s featured on our lists of the Best Backpacking Tents and Best Ultralight Tents. These have not been repaired or modified by us after production so please do not purchase this if you do not want to potentially deal with the issue. Save money with the award-winning Lunar Solo tent – and buy more of the ultralight gear on your list.
