Six Moon Designs Lunar Duo Tent Review

In fact, the vestibules on the Duo are some of the largest we’ve seen on a backpacking tent. The harsh slant of the sidewalls on the Lunar Solo give it a pyramid-like shape, which is super efficient for shedding rain and light snow. This not only helps the tent to dry faster, but it also cuts down on condensation wetting through to the inside since there’s nowhere for water to pool up on the outside.

So the only way we’re going to be able to move forward is if you will respect our rules and we’ll respect your point of view. Something is not connecting with those two points of view. And as if that’s not hard enough, you then have Congress and the political system with its own agenda coming in and putting its thumb on a scale of an already very difficult situation.

Budget-Friendly Ultralight Backpacking Hacks

Six Moon has detailed advice on their website under the set up tab on which order to place the stakes in and when to insert the pole. I’ve followed their advice carefully, and I’ve also tried almost every other imaginable combination of staking and poling. Theirs is a good default—one would hope so—but I can attest that on uneven ground with dodgy staking opportunities, practicing other approaches will pay dividends. The wrinkle is getting those back and side strips of mesh to stand open and clear for ventilation. You can see in the photo on the river bank in Arkansas that I emphatically didn’t get it right so the walls of the tent came right down to the gravel.

SHEDS RAIN WELL

Once you’ve dialed in the procedure, it goes up within maybe five minutes—not quite as easily as a freestanding tent, but that’s one of the tradeoffs for the weight savings. When staked out properly, the tent has a taut pitch that stands up well to moderate winds. A 50L backpack is the ultimate backpacking capacity, with room for extra-long hauls.

You’re gonna have that issue with pretty much any single-wall tent though, so we don’t find this to be too big a deal. Six Moon Designs also sells the Lunar Duo ($375, 2 lbs. 13 oz.), which pitches with two trekking poles and has two doors and vestibules, thus minimizing the headroom and ventilation issues of the Lunar Solo. The 8.5-square-foot vestibule has adequate space for storing a lightweight backpack and boots while allowing you to come and go, and the vestibule door rolls back to boost ventilation and give you a view of the night sky. I could tie back or close the vestibule door while lying flat in my bag—it was entirely within reach. There is a strong temptation to radically angle the bottom of the pole outward to stretch the floor smooth and produce the largest possible living space.

Plan Your Trip

Internal condensation is easy to keep under control, provided you practice good campsite selection and keep the vestibule partially open at night. But the thing I’ve always liked about the Lunar Solo is its spacious interior and headroom. The tent’s height and hexagon footprint provide plenty of space to sit up, change clothing, and store extra gear inside the tent when you want a little privacy or to grab some shuteye.

It has a built-in bathtub floor and an attached mesh inner tent that zips shut, so you can rest easy knowing you aren’t going to wake up with a spider on your face. A single-wall tent like the Lunar Duo is a good happy medium for those who want their shelter to be light, but also bug-free. We often use non-freestanding tents when we want to go as light as possible on a trip, but they can be a little intimidating if you’ve never used one. You may also have to get creative with your pitch if the ground is not suitable for tent stakes. And so when you have a question that feels as urgent as this war does for a lot of people, I think it reverberates in an incredibly intense way on those campuses. And there’s something like — I don’t know if it’s quite a contradiction of terms, but there’s a collision of different values at stake.

And this is not representative of the vast majority of the protesters in the encampment, who mostly had been peaceful. They would later hold a Seder, actually, with some of the pro-Palestinian Jewish protesters in their ranks. But those videos are reaching members of Congress, the very same Republicans that Shafik had testified in front of just a few days before. And now they’re looking and saying, you have lost control of your campus, you’ve turned back on your word to us, and you need to resign.

NOT FACTORY SEAM-SEALED

After a couple practice pitches, it’ll only take you 5-10 minutes to set up the Lunar Duo. That said, it will never be quite as quick and easy as pitching a typical freestanding tent. Unlike some ultralight tarp shelters, the Duo is fully enclosed to keep insects and critters at bay.

I've used it in the Rockies, Sierras, Tetons, Cascades, and Appalachians on more that 100 nights. Condensation can get bad on humid east coast nights but in general it hasn't been a problem. The footprint is large for a 1 person tent so it doesn't always fit in spots that a smaller tent might, but it does allow plenty of room for my dog in the tent with me. If you have any concerns about your purchase, don't hesitate to let us know.

We’ve been through some extremely turbulent winds in this tent, and though the experience wasn’t entirely stress-free, it gave us full confidence in the Lunar Duo for weather protection. We haven’t seen a one-person tent that’s comparable in floor space and weight that even comes close to the value price of the Lunar Solo. Sure, you could go lighter with a Dyneema shelter or a tarp, but most of those options are more expensive and aren’t fully enclosed like the Lunar Solo. With dual oversize vestibules, each person has plenty of weatherproof storage for gear.
